5 Ways to Celebrate the Season

What better way to celebrate this holiday season than with a big, loud parade? Here are some Texas-sized parades to attend across the state. And for those looking for a nontraditional Thanksgiving, try the Turkey Trot 5K race in Dallas!Alpha Testing, Inc.

A Taste of Alpha

20161103_1819082

It is always a pleasure to share our slice of the engineering world with high school students. Last week, Alpha Testing’s Fort Worth office hosted an ACE Mentoring event that introduced juniors and seniors to geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing. Among the attendees were 10 students from Fort Worth ISD, Northwest ISD, Keller ISD, and Birdville ISD, along with 5 mentors from RVI Planning, Dunaway Associates, Turner, and Linbeck.

Alpha’s tour guides included Brian Hoyt (Fort Worth Geotechnical Manager), Tim Begole (Project Manager), Maxx Begole (Fort Worth Lab Manager), and Robert Boone (Business Development). After some BBQ and a Q&A with Brian, the group got a behind the scenes look at collecting and testing a sample through an ATV drill rig demonstration followed by a lab tour. Tim and Maxx showed the workings of Alpha’s proctor machine, a concrete cylinder break, PI analysis, and a -200 sieve.

Why We Do Canstruction

Here are the facts:

$17,350.53 donated
158,300 cans
183,967 meals provided

This year’s Canstruction was a huge success in many ways. The de-canstruction of our Dallas skyline went down last Saturday. Over 13,000 cans were disassembled – turning our skyline structure into meals. As with most tear downs, the process went by much faster than the build, especially with the help of students from DISD’s Lassiter Early College High School at El Centro.

Alpha’s Jeff Wilt said, “Those kids were great, they really stepped up and probably worked harder than everyone else! Hopefully some have interest in engineering or architecture as future careers. I would welcome them back next year during the construction phase.”

AND for the cherry on top… our structure was featured on WFAA. Watch the video here.

A big thanks to all who volunteered, and we hope to see students from Lassiter again next year!
