Beat the Houston Heat!

Yes, the inevitable triple digit temperatures are finally upon us here in Texas, but that does not mean you cannot still have a cool time around H-town! There are plenty of things to do to “beat the Houston heat” that do not include burning a hole in your wallet.

This summer, several popular Houston museums are offering free admission every Thursday afternoon including: Museum of Natural Science, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Children’s Museum of Houston, The Health Museum, Houston Museum of African American Culture, and the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum.

Busy Thursdays? No worries. There are also plenty of museums that are free every day of the year including: Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, DiverseWorks, Houston Center for Photography, The Menil Collection, Moody Center for the Arts, and the Rothko Chapel to name a few.

So if you want to mix it up a little bit without breaking a sweat or the bank, stop by one of these fine Houston attractions with some friends, family, or just the kiddos. School may have stopped, but the learning never has to! Check out http://houmuse.org/free-admission-times/ for details.

Road Trip!

Looking to escape the Texas heat for a week, or just ready to plan next summer’s vacation? We recommend a road trip to Mount Rushmore National Memorial! Located in South Dakota’s magnificent Black Hills, Mount Rushmore is a definite must see, especially around the 4th of July.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the drive, we have some great places for your family to visit along the way!

First up, the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, KS where you can learn about the history of space travel, and even see Odyssey, the restored Apollo 13 Command Module. No kid (or adult) can resist imagining life in space or learning the history of rockets!

Next, head to Omaha, NE, where you can visit Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. Make sure to visit the zoo’s Desert Dome, which is the largest indoor desert in the world and includes animals and plants from southern Africa’s Namib Desert, the Red Center of Australia and the Sonoran Desert of the southwest United States. Don’t forget to pack those swimsuits, so you can cool off at the Alaskan Adventure splash grounds after a long day of exploring.

Once you make it to South Dakota, we suggest staying in Custer, SD, minutes from Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Badlands National Park, Crazy Horse Memorial, and much more! If you visit around Independence Day, you might even run into Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln.

If you venture up north, or anywhere else this summer, make sure to take your Alpha backpack and hat so we can see where your Alpha ‘A’ has been!

Cats, Coffee, Cartoons, OH MY!

New to Downtown Houston, El Gato Coffeehouse is Houston’s first “cat café”. Partnered with local no-kill animal shelter, Friends for Life, El Gato provides a comfortable, social environment for adoptable cats while also providing food and beverage options to those who visit this unique Houston hangout.

Not only can you eat local, tasty treats and play with the furry felines, but you can also watch “Caturday” morning cartoons, relax with yoga and cats, catch a Friday “Meowvie” night, and have a crafternoon making art and cat toys. If you are not a cat person, there is plenty of outdoor seating on their large patio where you can still enjoy your freshly made coffee and plentiful food options from local food trucks on property.

Whether you are looking to adopt your next furrever friend or just grab a cup of joe, you are helping to support a great cause all while having a good time doing something different. For more information on El Gato, upcoming events, and adoption options, visit their website at elgatocoffeehouse.com.
