Ever wonder how handwritten field reports turn into typed masterpieces? Behind the scenes, Alpha’s typists convert those reports to legible, typed documents for project managers to review. In record-setting fashion, Alpha’s Tiana Blackmon typed her 10,000th report in January, completing the feat in less than 8 months! That’s about 60-70 reports a day!
Tiana joined Alpha in May 2017, and has a Master of Science degree in Agricultural and Natural Resources Science from Tarleton State University. She hopes to use her degree to pursue research and community research opportunities.
If typing was an Olympic sport, Tiana would definitely bring home the gold! We’re glad to have her on our team!

Alpha’s Marketing intern, Nina Hernandez, has joined Alpha for the summer. A student at Ranger College, Nina will start her sophomore year this August. When class or work is not in session, Nina spends her time outside on softball fields, playing for either her select summer league Fire and Ice 18u or for the Ranger College softball team. Having played all positions (her favorite outfield), she knows the importance of having good dirt around those diamonds, “Good dirt is key in softball or baseball because without it, it’s hard to dive or slide without injuries.”
Softball and baseball teams look for consistent dirt every game, every season. ENR published an article about a partnership that embraced the need for field dirt consistency. Southern Athletic Fields partnered with Pugmill Systems to solve the dirt issue by creating specific clay and sand formulas for each client and modifying a standard pug mill machine to get the job done. The result? Same dirt every season!
While Alpha doesn’t create the visible dirt on the surface of softball and baseball fields, we do our part with the dirt underneath the surface and the building materials above – providing environmental services, geotechnical engineering, and construction materials testing. Alpha has served numerous ballparks for a variety of clients including Prairie View A&M University, Texas Christian University, Dallas Baptist University, Anna ISD, Lewisville ISD, Bland ISD, Kaufman ISD, and many more.

Shout out to all of our drillers and technicians who brave the early mornings, hot summers, cold winters, and all the weather in between. Stay warm out there and thank you for all you do!

Congratulations to our five recipients of the 2015 Founder’s Award! Every year, we recognize our employees from each office who routinely demonstrate a commitment to embracing and solving any challenge before them. Presented at our Alpha Christmas parties, this award was created to recognize those who give exceptional service to both clients and our Alpha family.
This year’s recipients are Harsha Addula, PE and Junior Hernandez from our Dallas office, Bodie Yarbrough from our Fort Worth office, John Joseph from our Houston office, and Judy Villarreal from our San Antonio office. Congratulations with a heartfelt thank you for being examples to all of us at Alpha!
Alpha’s Junior Hernandez starred in one of the videos presented at the 2015 World of Concrete conference in Las Vegas, where thousands of concrete enthusiasts come together to discuss, well concrete! Although concrete is one of many materials our testing labs inspects, it is a vital material used in almost every construction project. Alpha’s Construction Materials Testing (CMT) department ensures the integrity of concrete that will be used anywhere from roads to walls. In the video, Junior laid out the bones of Alpha’s intricate CMT services in under one minute – a difficult task for even our 25 year Alpha veteran!
Here it is, the third installment in the four-part series recognizing the 2013 recipients of the annual Where It All Begins Awards (see Fort Worth’s recipient here, and San Antonio’s here)! Stay tuned for the fourth and final installment, coming in the 4th Quarter 2014!
We love to recognize our employees for their commitment to the Alpha Way—First in Service to our clients, co-workers, and the community! The winner of the 2013 Founders’ Award, Houston’s version of the Where It All Begins Award, Victor Barron, proudly exemplifies this commitment. Victor goes the extra mile to support the Alpha family on the job and in the field. We are proud to acknowledge his hard work and dedication with the annual award, as a token of our thanks to this outstanding employee.

Victor began working at Alpha just over a year ago, but Alpha is just one part of his life. When not on the job, Victor likes to beat the Texas heat at the lake, the beach, and the pool. But he might not have much time for the life aquatic this summer—we at Alpha want to join Victor and his wife Jessica in welcoming their first son, Damian Joseph, born May 21st! Congratulations, Victor and Jessica!
You may know him as Robert, Tim, Bo, or Timothy Begole Jr., but no matter what you call him, we call him a winner! For 2013, Tim Jr. was the Alpha “Where it all Begins” award winner in the Fort Worth office. This Award is given in recognition of performance exemplifying the “Alpha Way” – First in Service to clients, co-workers, and the community.
Tim started working for Alpha over 8 years ago as a field/lab technician and he quickly moved up to dispatcher, then to lab manager, and is now a project manager. He has been happily married for ten years and has two boys (Timothy, 4, and Jack, 2). Tim enjoys playing golf, being outdoors as much as possible, and watching the Rangers play (Texan through and through)!
